after balthus ~ acrylic on canvas

the holes on the left are

for this little notebook.

it's a 'memo book' made by meade - 4 1/2" x 7" on the outside.  so i can have a book to stick oil - and all  kinds of - paintings in, on different kinds of paper.  the paper sticking out beyond the cover is the kind that comes in shoe boxes.

as much as i like the 'book boxes' that i made for loose paintings, there's nothing like flipping through a book of paintings. (it seems  ; )

p.s.  i switched to the mosaic template but the sidebar was way messed up,  so i've gone to a template similar to the old one.  but different, ha!   onward...

“As far as I am concerned, a painting speaks for itself. What is the use of giving explanations, when all is said and done? A painter has only one language.”

  3. Such a sweet little book for your wee paintings. I love it!!!!! I can see you will be having fun with this one for awhile. Blog is lookin spiffy. I hate it when stuff goes wonky on my blog, all that formatting mumbo jumbo that goes right over head. I'll stick with paint, HA, at least I know how that works and formatting is not required or needed. :) Have a wonderful week!

well, i wouldn't say the blog is looking spiffy, lol - i was sad to see that the font i used to use in the sidebar is no longer available, and and there are some other changes i need to make - when i have the time and patience! but, yeah, the old look is gone and that does feel good. time to move on.

you have a wonderful week, too...

  5. Love your 'notebook' with hole punches - great idea! 'After Balthus' - love the acrylic work - did you use your acrylics like a wash? -- and that Picasso quote is one of my favorites -- even as I try sometimes to explain my paintings to myself : -)

    1. heya judy...

those are heavy body acrylics - i've been learning/practicing with them for a week now! the paint is thick, not a wash. i'm really loving getting an opaque look that dries quickly. i've been having *a lot* of fun with them.

smiling at your words about the quote. i know... : )

  8. I think a painting is its own language & sometimes explanation "closes" other possible engagements with the work.

But, I don't believe it is always the painter's only language; unless you are so merged deeply within, and unwilling to surface (which happens) or perhaps like some of the Autistic I worked with, yes, any language created is a new. An only, a power.. acknowledged.

playing devil's advocate with Picasso, ha ahha.

    1. ha ha... Devil's Advocate M. : )

i agree, there are other languages. i don't think most of us are merged so deeply with painting that we can't communicate in other ways. but explaining a painting is truly ridiculous in my book. truly...

    1. no, i haven't done an homage to klimt. oh wait, i think i might have tried once and it fell so ridiculously short that i never considered it again! but really, i think i could give it a whirl now... i'm crazy about his paintings; every single thing about them.

      luv ya back...

  11. Love this delicious little notebook! I expect to see you painting on the head of a pin sometime soon! I always love your exploration of new materials.

Great quote. Thinking he means that the painting stands on it's own, not requiring explanation like some of the longwinded gobblydegoop you sometimes see in galleries, explaining someone's work. I so agree.

    1. ha ha, carole! i think a pin head's a little too small, but yeah, i do love to work small.

it seems to me he's talking about the gobbydegoop of art historians/critics. gak!

  12. super great texture in this little notebook filled with shoe box paper... and pablo could be so ornery sometimes... but you are probably right, he did have critics to put up with... xoxo

    1. i can't imagine pablo's life - dealing with fame, the critics, the whole money thing... after seeing his drawings (and paintings, but it was the drawings that touched me deeply) in person i have nothing but the greatest respect for him. and i do love his words - the ones i've read anyway.

  14. Hey there wonderful one! I've been popping by from time to time to keep my eye out. Love your new template. Clean. Well I just had to say that recently, I've discovered (they've been out there for years and years apparently! HA!) but I just discovered the 3 3/4" X 6 11/16" [but who is splitting hairs here?] size of 6 ring [6 on upper and 6 on lower] binder. It has changed my life. The size is big enough to actually do something, yet small enough to stick in a pocket, etc. There are a zillion covers available as many companies produce them (from designer style to stationers business type ones) and I go to the 2nd hand store to buy them. Inside you can find all kinds of things that fit in (like page dividers, rulers, plastic pencil holders, you name it...all appropriately punched with the 6 holes.) Here is the best part (wait for it): DAISO! A Japanese department store that are all over the place (in Vancouver we have two) and they sell everything for two bucks. They have a huge selection of wonderful papers (really a big selection) that fit into those binders. I am crazy in love with them. Stop me please. Now I am off to see more of your fabby art. Love N, xo
